Planning a quick trip to Milan? This 3-day guide covers where to eat, how to get around, and easy day trips. Whether it’s your first time or a return visit, here are a few tips to help you make the most of your stay.
Eating in Milan
Most restaurants in Milan are open from 12:30 PM to 2:30 PM, then reopen for dinner at 7:30 PM. This midday break is typical, so plan your meals accordingly.
💡 Pro tip: For popular spots like Trippa, book ahead. Even as a solo diner, I couldn’t get a table without a reservation. That said, many smaller restaurants are fine for walk-ins.
Look for “Osteria”
Restaurants with “Osteria” in the name are often more local and less touristy than those near the city center. They usually offer traditional dishes, better value, and a more relaxed atmosphere.
Chinatown & Golden Bao
Milan has a vibrant Chinatown, and it’s worth exploring. One standout spot is Golden Bao—great dumplings, good prices, and a casual setting. It’s a nice change of pace from the classic Italian menus.
Getting Around the City
If you’re staying a few days, pick up an MTM card for unlimited travel on the metro, trams, and buses. The 3-day pass costs just €14 and is a great value.
💡 Pro tip: Buses can be unpredictable. I found walking and the metro to be the easiest ways to get around.
Easy Day Trip: Verona
Looking to escape Milan for a day? Take a train to Verona—it’s just one hour from Milan Central Station. A perfect day trip, especially if you book your train tickets in advance to save money.
Visit the Navigli District
On a sunny day, head to the Navigli district. This canal-side area has a relaxed feel and is great for walking, having coffee, or enjoying an aperitivo. Some compare the vibe to Amsterdam, and I’d agree.
Milanese Dishes to Try
Make sure to try some local favorites while you’re in Milan:
- Risotto alla Milanese (with saffron)
- Cotoletta alla Milanese (breaded veal cutlet)
- Panettone (especially good around the holidays)
